Privacy Policy
Last updated: 28 September 2026
Lumi ("we", "our", or "the app") is a mental wellness app made by Lumi Studios. This policy explains what the app keeps on your phone, what leaves your phone and why, who processes it, and your rights.
The short version
- Your journal, moods, check-ins and chats live on your phone. We can't read them.
- When you use an AI feature, only the words that request needs leave your phone. They pass through our servers without being stored.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and we never sell your data.
1. Data We Collect
Data stored on your device only (never sent to our servers)
- Journal entries, moods and check-ins, including any thought Lumi edits that you choose to keep
- Your Today's thought results
- Breathing, tool and game history
- App preferences, such as your reminder time, and the details you give during onboarding: your age range, and your name if you share it. If you started with an earlier version of the app, the goals you picked then are kept too. The country used to show the right helplines comes from your phone's region settings.
- Lumi chat history and encrypted conversation summaries (mood, topics discussed, a brief text summary)
- Your app lock PIN (never transmitted)
- Scheduled notifications: your daily hello if you turn it on and, if you start a free trial, one reminder two days before it ends. Your phone schedules these; nothing about them is sent to us.
Data processed by our servers
- Authentication identity: When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your user ID and email to create your account. We use Supabase Auth for secure session management.
- AI feature requests: When you use an AI feature, the content that request needs is sent to our Supabase Edge Functions, which pass it to our AI provider and return the answer. We do not store it on our servers. Our AI provider is Anthropic (Claude), with Google (Gemini) as a backup (see section 3).
Before anything is sent, the app checks your words on your phone. If they read like a crisis, or like someone is hurting you, nothing is sent to any AI provider and the app shows you people who can help.
What each feature sends:
- Lumi's edit of your own thought: the thought you typed (up to 280 characters) and the mood you picked. The example thoughts and Today's thought are edited on your phone and never sent.
- Lumi chat: today's messages in that chat, plus compact context to personalise replies: your mood, a small number of recent themes, whether you've reframed recently, and a short redacted summary. No raw journal text is sent by default, and exact dates are left out unless you open a chat about a specific journal entry.
- Reframes: the situation and thought you wrote for that entry, and the thinking pattern if you chose one.
- Weekly reflection: counts and labels only: moods, thinking-pattern names, whether you reframed, and times of day. No journal text.
With each request to Anthropic we also send a pseudonymous reference made from your account ID with a one-way hash. It is not your name or email. It lets Anthropic detect abuse of its service.
- Credit usage: We track the number of AI credits used per account to enforce usage limits. No wellness content is stored.
Data we never collect
- We do not use analytics or tracking services
- We do not collect device identifiers for advertising
- We do not sell or share personal data with third parties for their own purposes
- We do not store your journal content on our servers
- We do not use your content to train AI models, and our AI providers do not either (see section 3)
2. How We Use Your Data
We process your data only for the following purposes. For each purpose, we identify the legal basis under GDPR Article 6 where applicable.
-
Authentication: To identify your account and manage AI credit balances.
Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)): Processing is necessary for the performance of a contract. Providing you access to AI features requires a stable account identity.
-
AI processing: To create Lumi's edits, chat replies, reframes and weekly reflections using our AI providers. Content passes through our servers transiently and is not stored on Lumi servers. When you use Lumi chat, compact structured context such as mood, recent themes, reframe status and a short redacted summary may be included to personalise replies. No raw journal text is sent by default, and exact dates are left out unless you open a chat about a specific journal entry. Your conversation history with Lumi is stored encrypted on your device and is never uploaded to any server.
Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)): Processing is necessary to perform the AI features you have requested.
-
Subscription management: We use RevenueCat to manage Lumi Pro subscriptions and purchases. RevenueCat receives your anonymous app user ID to process purchases, and tells the app whether you are subscribed or on a free trial. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)): Processing is necessary to fulfil your purchase.
-
Credit limit enforcement: We store the count of AI interactions used per day per account to enforce free-tier limits and fair-use limits.
Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): Legitimate interest: preventing abuse of the service and ensuring fair access for everyone.
3. Third-Party Services
- Supabase: Authentication and serverless AI processing. Privacy Policy
- Anthropic (Claude): Our AI provider for Lumi's edits, chat replies, reframes and weekly reflections. Your request reaches Anthropic through our Supabase Edge Functions under Anthropic's commercial terms. Anthropic does not use this content to train its models without our express permission, which we have not given. Anthropic keeps API inputs and outputs for no more than 30 days, except when its automated safety systems flag them, in which case they may be kept for up to 2 years to enforce its usage policy, or when the law requires longer. Anthropic Privacy Policy | Commercial Terms
- Google Gemini: Our backup AI provider. We use it only when Anthropic is unavailable or not switched on. Your request reaches Google through our Supabase Edge Functions. Google may retain prompts and responses for up to 55 days for abuse monitoring until Zero Data Retention is approved and enabled for the deployment, then permanently deletes them. Google does not use your data for model training. We use Paid Services under Google's Cloud Data Processing Addendum. Gemini Data Policy | Google Privacy Policy
- RevenueCat: Subscription and purchase management. Privacy Policy
- Apple / Google: Sign-in, app distribution and payments. See their respective privacy policies.
Our providers may process data outside the UK and the EEA, including in the United States, under their data processing terms.
4. Data Retention
- Local data (journals, moods, check-ins, kept edits, settings, encrypted AI conversation summaries): Stored only on your device. It is kept until you delete individual entries, clear Lumi's conversation memory, reset the app, sign out, delete your account or uninstall the app. Signing out and deleting your account both erase Lumi's data from this phone, and the app asks you first. We have no access to this data and cannot recover it for you.
- Authentication account and AI credit balance (server-side): Kept on our servers until you request account deletion. When we process your deletion request, your user ID, email and credit records are permanently removed.
- AI request content: Not stored on our servers. Content sent for AI processing passes through our servers transiently and is not logged. Anthropic keeps it for no more than 30 days, or up to 2 years if its safety systems flag it. When Google Gemini is used as a backup, Google may keep it for up to 55 days for safety and abuse monitoring until Zero Data Retention is approved and enabled for the deployment. Neither provider uses it for model training. No logs of your wellness content are kept on our servers.
5. Your Rights
General rights (all users)
- Use Lumi without AI: Journaling, check-ins, breathing, grounding and the other tools work without an account, and nothing you write leaves your phone unless you use an AI feature.
- Export: You can share any journal entry as text at any time. With Lumi Pro you can also export your journal as a PDF, a CSV spreadsheet or a JSON backup.
- Delete account: You can request deletion of your account and all server-side data from within the app (Profile > Account > Delete Account) or by contacting us at [email protected]. When deletion is complete, your user ID, email and credit records are permanently removed from our servers, and Lumi's data on your phone is erased too.
- Clear Lumi's memory: You can clear Lumi's conversation memory at any time by clearing the chat history in the chat. This permanently deletes the conversation summaries and chat history stored on your device.
- Portability: Your journal lives on your phone, not on our servers. If you want a copy of what we hold server-side (your account ID, email and credit counts), ask us at [email protected] and we will send it in a standard format.
- Access / Correction (GDPR): UK and EU/EEA residents may request access to or correction of any personal data we hold server-side. Contact us at [email protected].
- Restriction / Objection (GDPR): UK and EU/EEA residents may request restriction of processing or object to processing based on legitimate interest. Contact us at [email protected].
For California Residents (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA):
- Right to Know: You have the right to request disclosure of the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the sources of that information, the purposes for which it is used, and the categories of third parties with whom it is shared.
- Right to Delete: You have the right to request deletion of personal information we have collected about you, subject to certain exceptions. To submit a deletion request, contact us at [email protected] with the subject line "CCPA Deletion Request."
- Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing: We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. No opt-out is required, but you may contact us to confirm this at any time.
- Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your CCPA rights. You will not be denied goods or services, charged different prices, or provided a different level of quality as a result of exercising these rights.
- Right to Correct: You have the right to request correction of inaccurate personal information we maintain about you.
- Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information: We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information beyond the purposes for which it was collected (account management and AI feature delivery).
To exercise your CCPA rights, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond to verifiable requests within 45 days.
6. Children's Privacy
Lumi is for people aged 13 and over and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. During onboarding, the app asks your age before it asks anything else about you. If you are under 13, onboarding stops there and nothing is saved except that answer. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will promptly delete it.
Users aged 13–17 may use Lumi with the consent of a parent or guardian, as stated in our Terms of Service. We encourage parents and guardians to take an interest in their teen's use of the app, particularly the AI features.
7. Security
We use industry-standard security measures, including encrypted connections (TLS), secure authentication (Supabase Auth with OAuth 2.0), and an optional on-device app lock with PIN or biometric authentication.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will tell you about significant changes in the app. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
